ViCLAS records patterns of behaviour and/or circumstances that are connected with or suggestive of violent and sexual offences or which are sexually motivated, and which qualify for analysis and research in ViCLAS. These offences include:
- homicides (including attempts)
- sexual offences (including attempts and offences only prosecuted on complaint)
- missing persons cases, if the overall circumstances indicate that a serious crime has been committed
- suspicious approaches to children and young people, if the overall circumstances suggest a violent or sexual motive abduction (not including abduction of children by their parents or abduction of minors by their legal guardians)
- cruelty to animals, if the overall circumstances suggest a violent or sexual motive
